A maverick for his entire career, Albert Moeschinger was nevertheless awarded the Music Prize of the city of Basel in 1953 and was considered ‘the most versatile and most imaginative among the creative personalities of more recent Swiss music’ by musicologist Hans Oesch. These three works illustrate Moeschinger’s impressive stylistic breadth. The early Third String Quartet reflects his inclination towards expressionistic and emotional musical language; the Fifth Quartet concisely and humorously sets particular character types into music. The Funeral Music for Mrs Hanny Bürgi is a poetic portrait of an idiosyncratic personality.
