opis
Joseph Marx was described by Wilhelm Furtwängler as one of the leading figures in Austria’s music scene, and while his music disappeared completely from concert programmes after his death he ‘shaped an era’ and left a profound impression on several generations of composers. Marx made no secret of his admiration for the Classical giants of music, and the late-period works in this programme pay homage to Haydn and others while retaining Romantic sensibilities: a blend of old and new that creates something remarkably timeless.
This recording was first released in 2003 on the ASV label, and is the second in a fourvolume set of Joseph Marx’s orchestral works now being re-released on the Naxos label. Vol. 1 was released in December 2018 (8.573832).
Critical acclaim for this recording on its original release came from MusicWeb International: ‘immensely enjoyable music… The subtly ambient engineering is excellent. As ever the CD is greatly strengthened by the notes written by Berkant Haydin who single-handedly wrought the Marx renaissance we are now enjoying. The Marx renaissance opens a fresh chapter here in music that looks to Germany’s musical heritage with results that are lightof- heart yet serenely nostalgic.’
American conductor Steven Sloane is a versatile and dedicated musician. A student of Eugene Ormandy, Franco Ferrara and Gary Bertini, he served as music director of the Spoleto Festival USA and of Opera North in Leeds, UK. He also served as music director of the American Composers Orchestra and principal conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (2007–13). As the long-term general music director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, Steven Sloane pushed forward the financing and the building of the orchestra’s own music centre, the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr.
