"Il pianto e il riso delle quattro stagioni dell'anno per la morte, esultazione e coronazione di Maria Assunta in Cielo" (1731) ("Weeping and laughing of the four seasons to the death, to the praise and to the coronation of Mary who ascended into heaven") is the penultimate of the four oratorios by Benedetto Marcello. As a member of the Venetian aristocracy, he had to pay less attention to conventions in his music than his professional contemporaries. Thus he repeatedly found bold, unconventional solutions that made him one of the most interesting Italian baroque composers.
