Mozart's contemporary Joseph Martin Kraus has long ceased to be regarded as a "minor master". The fact that his fascinating solo dramas en miniature have hardly been noticed so far, however, is probably due to the breakneck difficulties with which Kraus has larded these works. He composed them in his capacity as Swedish court composer for the Primadonna Fru Augusti there, whose strength were breathtaking coloraturas at dizzying heights. Simone Kermes is in no way inferior to her famous predecessor. Their virtuosity and musicality turn these forgotten cantatas into musical jewels.
