One would occasionally like to describe his piano works as cheerful, relaxed manifestations of Reger's conceptions, but some of his whimsical, exuberant conservatisms, which are already thoughtful the next moment, give the impression that a French spirit à la Poulenc has been at work here in German lands, and that at times a messenger of Scriabin has given word. So aptly did one critic review our Vol. 1 of the piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. Stylistically quite different from his contemporary Busoni, Karg-Elert was also a maverick and maverick. He wrote almost exclusively for keyboard instruments, be it organ, harmonium or piano. It is above all the small forms, the bizarre genre pictures, which constitute his compositional strength and independence. This is also the case in our Vol. 2, for which pianist Ernst Breidenbach has selected five cycles: Waltz Scenes op. 45, 4 Piano Pieces op. 23, From the North op. 18, Patina op. 64 and the Travel Pictures op. 7.
