opis
Our extensive and successful Röntgen edition would not be complete without his cello concertos – interpreted by Gregor Horsch, the principal cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra In Amsterdam. Even the most cursory glance at Julius Röntgen's work catalogue demonstrates that this composer had a special preference for music featuring the violoncello. From 1870 to 1930 he wrote not only fourteen sonatas and many kinds of individual pieces for violoncello and piano but also five works for solo violoncello and three concertos, a variation series, and a fantasy for violoncello and orchestra. He was a close friend of the famous cellist Julius Klengel, who regularly appeared in Röntgen's Amsterdam concerts beginning around 1880. Röntgen must have learned a lot from this cooperation and used it to his advantage. Like the third concerto, the first Concerto begins with a long cantilena framed and guided by the orchestra's powerful chords. Everything is »quasi cadenza, « and the soloist has plenty of room to display his skill. The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is led in vibrant interpretations under the Dutch conductor David Porcelijn.
