opis
William Hayes (1708-1777) is one of those English composers who unjustly stand in the shadow of George Frideric Handel and whose importance is only gradually being appreciated As an enthusiastic "Handlian", the organist and professor of music at Oxford was a keen conductor of his works - without having to be considered an epigone in compositional terms. Rather, he consciously sought his own creative areas, which were not or only sporadically served by Handel. Moreover, he was more open to the gallant style than his idol. His large ode "The Passions" from 1750 clearly confirms his outstanding position among Handel's English contemporaries.
