Its typical features include the invention of beautiful melodies of cantabile character as well as passages of the highest virtuosity and technical difficulty challenging the soloists. The Salzburg court ensemble employed outstanding musicians on whom Haydn could rely for tasks of this kind. The Salzburg Hofkapelle continues to operate precisely in this tradition.
