Francesco Geminiani (1687-1762) was wrongly dismissed for too long as the epigone of his teacher Corelli, who had only profited from the Corelli mania of his adopted country England. His Concerti grossi Op. 2 (1732) already show a personal style of their own, in which Corelli appears at best as a superficial point of reference. Geminiani, for example, expands the Concertino to two violins, viola and cello, and exhibits harmonic characteristics that seem far more spontaneous than in the classic Corelli. Thanks to the fresh musicality of Auser Musici, it is easy to understand why the English called him in the same breath as Handel.
