The new artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, Christian Arming, makes his debut here with symphonic works by César Franck. If the Symphony in D minor is a common repertoire piece, one should rarely encounter the symphonic poem Ce qu'on entend sur la montagne as well as the ballet music from his opera "Hulda" La Lutte de l'hiver et du printemps on recordings. Franck's symphonic poem may even be the first of its kind, and the composer is basing his work on the same poem by Victor Hugo as Franz Liszt in his Mountain Symphony, written a little later. Arming gives both rarities the same creative attention as the established repertoire piece.
