description
An audiophile-grade LP transfer of a 2006 hit from the Brilliant Classics catalogue: stylish and exuberant accounts of some of Shostakovich’s most popular orchestral music.
•Shostakovich: Overture on Russian and Kirghiz Themes op. 115
•Shostakovich: Novorossijsk Chimes op. 111b
•Shostakovich: Festive Overture op. 96
Dmitri Shostakovich wrote symphonies and string quartets with violent and intense music. But he did have a sense of humour as well. Just as he could handle the very un-Russian jazz idiom. Both jazz suites show the light-hearted side of Russia’s most important 20th-century composer.
Performed by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, under the expert baton of conductor Theodore Kuchar, this release showcases a powerful, precise interpretation of Shostakovich’s dynamic and emotionally complex works.
