description
"How unbroken this still healthy voice still speaks to us, how directly the Varady experience itself is immediately present again on the TV screen is revealed by Monsaingeon in his new film, which actually only shows her at home in Starnberg teaching. And even though here she mainly conveys mezzo arias to her willing students, it is thrilling how wonderfully she also knows how to convey the spirit of the notes and the characters behind them as Werther's Charlotte, Carmen and Rossini-Rosina. A few concert excerpts under the direction of her husband Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and scrupulous interview statements loosen up this so simple yet characterful film. As a two-hour bonus there are the uncut lessons. Fascinated, you wouldn't want to miss a minute of it. • "FonoForum 08 / 09
