description
The Romanian conductor Constantin Silvestri (1913-1969) began his distinguished career in 1930 with the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra, leading to the directorship of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra in 1945.
• Shostakovich: Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65
This recording is a rarity and belonged to Silvestri, only discovered after his death.
Silvestri’s live performance from 1961 of Shostakovich Symphony No.8 is a new addition to his discography, as is Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon Overture.
During his early years in Moscow, Silvestri conducted Shostakovich and was praised by the composer.
Silvestri’s only other Szostakowicz recording was Symphony No.5 with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1960.
A wide-ranging recording captures Silvestri’s electrifying performance of Shostakovich’s greatest symphony
ICA Classics will be issuing more Silvestri/BSO ‘live’ recordings as part of their BBC Legends anthologies.
