The first two works in this programme date from Dohnányi's student days, so they are distinctly early works. They already showed that Dohnányi would continue the path of the German masters, especially Schumann and Brahms. He preserved the traditional, classical forms. It should be typical of his personal style that he recalls the main theme of the first movement in the finale. Even these early works were more than just a respectable success. The Suite en valse, composed in 1943, completes a period of Dohnányi's life that was extremely successful (the following year he emigrated first to Austria, then to the USA). From 1905 he was professor at the Berlin Musikhochschule, and from 1915 he held almost all key positions in Hungarian musical life.
