Danzi was one of the first composers to cultivate the wind quintet; these diverting pieces offer unexpected pleasure. On Naxos the horn soloist Michael Thompson has gathered round him a superbly balanced group of London’s leading wind players and they combine to give polished and beautifully blended performances. The Wind Sextet is in the tradition of wind Harmoniemusik and is fluently appealing. The second disc also includes Danzi’s First Horn Sonata, probably modelled on Beethoven’s similar work, although the style is more romantic. The Second Sonata is even more lyrically gallant, particularly in the theme and variations finale. But any one of these three discs will give much enjoyment.• Penguin Guide, January 2009
