"Chabrier's music is an inexhaustible treasure", said Francis Poulenc, and he said it unfortunately too late, since he was not born until five years after the death of the so praised. Born as a lawyer's son in the Auvergne, he received piano lessons from the age of six, and later also instruction in violin and composition. Despite his obvious talents, he decided to study law and worked in the Ministry of the Interior until 1880. In that year he made the decision to devote himself exclusively to music in the future - and together with composer friend Henri Duparc he made a "pilgrimage" to his idol Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. As an all-round educated cultural man, Chabrier took a special interest in developments in painting and was also influenced by Impressionism in his musical style. Misjudged in his importance during his lifetime, Chabrier became an important role model for the coming generation of composers, especially for Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc.
