For many composers about whom Mozart spoke negatively in his letters, whether justifiably or merely out of envy or frustration, this sooner or later meant a kind of death sentence in the reputation of posterity, since Mozart's judgment was far too often adopted without criticism. Among the victims, besides Muzio Clementi, was Giuseppe Maria Cambini (1729-1783), whom Mozart accused of deceiving the performance of his Sinfonia concertante K. 297B. On the basis of three string quintets recorded here, the Ensemble Entr'acte, playing on period instruments, proves that Cambini's music is far better than Mozart would have us believe.
