In contrast to Italian, French or German harpsichord music of the 17th century, the English repertoire is no less important, but far less discographically indexed. With his sensational Byrd recording on ALPHA (ALP073) last year, Gustav Leonhardt undoubtedly turned his attention to this previously neglected repertoire. This is now followed, as a kind of "continuation", by another CD with works by William Byrd. On two wonderful instruments, a harpsichord after Ruckers and a virginal, Bertrand Cuiller beautifully brings out the characteristics of Elizabethan music for keyboard instruments
