More or less justified accusations of plagiarism obviously harm Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747) to this day and wrongly conceal the view of an important baroque composer, who was, after all, built up in London as a counterweight to Handel. His nearly 300 cantatas, which have so far hardly been developed scientifically, were highly esteemed by his contemporaries and still regarded at the end of the 18th century as prime examples of their kind. With his recording, Cyril Auvity confirms this esteem and reveals to us a contemporary and rival of Handel's who is worthy of discovery and who knows how to juggle musical affects such as tenderness, lamentation and pathos just as confidently.
