For Björn Schmelzer, Gilles Binchois (around 1400-1460) is one of the greatest "songwriters" of all time. A claim which he proves by means of Binchois' "plaints" (lamentations). In them, Binchois treats an understanding of joy that is committed to the late medieval zeitgeist, which must be seen as a decidedly sublime, even paradoxical feeling. The mediation by means of sadness and loneliness is by no means contradictory here. Binchois' chansons thus turn out to be precursors of the Portuguese Fado or even the Blues.
