In the 17th century a rich cultural life developed at the Habsburg Court. Eleonore von Gonzaga, the wife of Ferdinand II, had brought opera to Vienna from her Italian homeland, and the great music lover Leopold I, who also composed his own music, followed the example of the French Sun King in organising splendid festivities. Particularly appreciated was the art of imitating the sounds of nature or everyday life with musical means, for which the latest recording by the Ricercar Consorts with sonatas by Schmelzer, Kerll and Biber provides excellent examples.
