Even in literary studies Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857) is hardly noticed anymore, but around 1830 he was one of the most popular poets of France, who was named in the same breath as Victor Hugo. He owed his fame to his numerous chansons, which revolved around popular themes such as love, the lust for life and drinking. These are not original compositions, but new texts of songs popular at the time, which the poet Béranger often knew how to season with a powerful dash of biting satire. His texts reached all levels of the population, with the exception of the authorities, and he spared neither Napoleon nor the monarchy. When he was imprisoned again in 1829 for insulting a majesty, there were even hail protests throughout Europe. Arnaud Marzorati has sung some of the once so popular chansons for ALPHA.
