After an escape from serfdom and numerous stopovers, the still young Bohemian violinist and composer Franz Benda finally obtained a permanent position at the court of Frederick II in Prussia. Many of his compositions were written here, especially for "his" instrument, the violin. The cantabile style of his works gives the performer plenty of room for refined ornamentation and improvisation, which was very much in vogue at Benda's time, to put it in modern terms • Despite, or precisely because of, the musical and compositional quality, one wonders why so few recordings of Benda's violin sonatas exist so far. The present recordings are world premiere recordings based on authentic manuscripts from the Berlin State Library and recorded by the young violinist Hans-Joachim Berg, who specialized in this epoch, on an unchanged instrument from 1735
