Monn: Six Symphonies
Following our successful first release of Georg Matthias Monn's instrumental concertos, we are now releasing a CD of six of his symphonies, not only to give the composer the recognition he deserves, but also to enable you to become acquainted with these lively works.Monn wrote more than 20 symphonies, only some of which have unfortunately survived.
CPO offers a selection from the complete works, which conveys a clear picture of the development and significance of the symphonist Monn. With recognizable sonata movement forms such as exposition or development, Monn already appears as a "pioneer of Viennese Classicism". Although on the one hand still rooted in the counterpoint of Johann Joseph Fux, his symphonies also display an original, erratic harmony that lends his music a high degree of expressiveness. And, incidentally, one of Monn's symphonies from 1740 is the first example in the history of the genre to feature a minuet!
Under the direction of Michi Gaigg, the Munich ensemble L'Arpa Fest-ante performs the symphonies in G major, E flat major, D major, A major and two in B flat major, which unfortunately cannot be dated precisely.
