His finale for Puccini's opera Turandot unfortunately remained his most famous work for a long time, outshining the profound musical abilities of the talented composer Franco Alfano. The works on this CD illustrate the contrasting aspects of Alfano's musical personality. The violin sonata is an impressive work full of power, speckled with impressionistic echoes, but of a post-romantic nature. It was first played in England by none other than the virtuoso Albert Sammons. With the Piano Quintet, his last composition for chamber ensemble in 1946, Alfano not only once again demonstrates his indestructible belief in the lyrical side of music, but also shows his rejection of the atonality in the music of his contemporaries.
