Scarlatti's "Griselda", first performed in Rome in 1721, remained a solitaire in the history of the Teatro Capranica and was not included in the repertoire elsewhere for financial reasons and due to changing tastes. The tragic story of King Gualtiero, who puts his ignoble wife Griselda through cruel trials in order to prove her steadfastness to his people and thus prove that her nobility of virtue is to be valued higher than the nobility of birth, was given a classic happy ending by the librettist Apostolo Zeno.
The Berliner Morgenpost described the 2003 release as "one of the best baroque opera recordings of recent years". Special mention was made of the fine cast of soloists and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, which provided "unearthly warming overhead light
