Giacomo Puccini's first opera "Le Villi" is already a curiosity because of its plot: it is about lumberjacks in the Black Forest, orgies in Mainz and the ghosts of cuckolded wives
No wonder that the work was not initially well received by Puccini's contemporaries. None other than Gustav Mahler, however, was taken with the opera and vigorously championed the work during his time in Hamburg. To this day, "Le Villi" is a rarity, both on the opera stage and on CD
And so this live recording of a concert performance from Malta, with its more than solid quality, is a great opportunity to question Puccini's "Le Villi" once again after years of neglect.
