Along with Karajan, Bernstein, and Solti, Rafael Kubelik is undoubtedly one of the great conductors of the second half of the 20th century. His integrity, coupled with his humanistic education and profound humanity, has become rare – and not only in the world of music. Hardly anyone can speak more lovingly about Kubelik the artist and man than Daniel Barenboim, who performed with him as a pianist from his early youth and, along with other important companions, has his say in this film. Interesting archival material from various sources (BBC, BR, and many others) documents Kubelik's unique career, which also reflects the political turning points in Europe. The dialogue with this very special artistic personality, who died in 1996, is far from over: While his Mahler interpretations in particular are still considered benchmarks today, the composer Kubelik's oeuvre, comprising five operas, three requiems, symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and songs, has yet to be discovered.
