Joshua Rifkin, musician and scholar, declared as early as the 1980s that Johann Sebastian Bach only used solo parts in his choral works. Over many years, Rifkin succeeded in proving this thesis, and more and more historically oriented ensembles are finding their way into this performance theory.
In 2006, after extensive research, Rifkin published the Urtext edition of Bach's Mass in B minor BWV232 with Breitkopf and Härtel. This edition compiles a work that Bach composed at various stages of his life, the only complete score of which was then administered by his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, who edited and disseminated his version. Rifkin eliminated Bach's son's changes, thoroughly examined the original manuscripts and the existing parts, and notated the revised version.
This version has now been recorded for the first time by the Dunedin Consort. The British vocal ensemble is essentially made up of a male and female singer in each part and, together with selected instrumentalists, the Dunedin Players, has achieved great acclaim.
