Elektra, the first of many fruits of the collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, draws on Siegmund Freud's psychoanalytic theories as a study of mental disruption and psychological abysses. At the same time, Elektra is an opera about strong female characters in a fractured society and their functions as mother and child, as sisters, daughters, and friends.
