The destruction and emotional trauma of the First World War and the uncertainty in the face of the economic, political and social upheavals of the post-war years also shook or even revised many artistic norms that had previously been considered irrefutable. Through their music, the composers presented here attempted to make this "new Europe" comprehensible for themselves and others, but also to give it a new sound. The five works recorded here therefore also represent the numerous new tendencies in European music of these years. The technically demanding choral works each give the Flemish Radio Choir under the direction of Paul Hillier the opportunity to demonstrate its extraordinary qualities. In contrast, the octet by Igor Stravinsky, written in 1923, I Solisti del Vento is allowed to do so.
