opis
The bassoon was one of Vivaldi's favourite instruments. No fewer than 37 concertos for this instrument have been preserved, far more than for popular instruments such as the flute or the oboe. To this day it remains a mystery what may have moved Vivaldi to advocate an instrument that until the beginning of the 18th century was usually used only as part of the basso continuo or at best with obbligato parts in opera arias.

Most of the concertos may have been written for the girls of the Ospedale della Pietà, where Vivaldi worked as a music teacher from 1703 to (with interruptions) 1718. At this time the bassoon was subject to fundamental constructive changes; the technical possibilities and timbres changed. Vivaldi must have known the instrument well, which can be concluded from the virtuoso passages and the timbre painting in the slow movements.
