French chamber cantatas are emotionally charged, self-contained opera scenes that brought the baroque music lover home the grand opera, so to speak. With limited means, skilful composers succeeded in achieving maximum effect. The mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik (a prizewinner at the Concours Reine Elisabeth, a participant in William Christie's Jardins des Voix) founded the ensemble Le Consort with her regular accompanist Justin Taylor and presents here two particularly effective cantatas by Michel Pignolet de Monteclair (1667-1737) as well as works by Courbois and Lefebvre, some of which were recorded here for the first time.
