When exploring musical terrae incognitae, Spain comes into my sights more and more often, because it simply has such wonderful jewels to offer that are unknown to us. A piano quartet by Joaquin Turina? A piano quintet by Enrique Granados? But yes!

If we now dedicate a CD to the work of both composers, it also expresses the cultural differences within Spain that still exist today, in that Turina comes from the southern Spanish province of Andalusia and Granados from the province of Catalonia, located in the northeast of Spain. Both composers remained true to their Spanish homeland throughout their lives. Turina's chamber music often derives its color from the folklore and guitarism of Andalusia, even if this is not indicated in the title, as in his Sonata espanola for violin and piano. Granados is more in the tradition of European Romanticism, as his Piano Quintet and Romance for violin and piano show

Ensemble Variable definitely makes for an exciting encounter of the Spanish kind that packs a punch.
