The roots of traditional Balkan music date back to ancient Greek civilization. In the two millennia since, it has been influenced by both East and West, serving as the nexus where the two meet and mingle.

Yet, traditional Balkan music has managed to preserve an original sound and spirit due to the rhythms and melodies that are closely linked to performance practices and traditions. The lyrics, melodies, and rhythms of this vibrant folk tradition continue to pulsate and are as vibrant as ever, constantly creating new forms and shapes.

This ensures the ever-changing beauty of the Balkan musical style and the many ways to play it. This publication presents authentic folk music performed by both professionals and amateurs throughout history. In just a few verses, they weave stories of bygone times and traditions when humans lived in harmony with nature, admired the power of thunder, and longed for nature's strength and beauty.

The times when we heard the birds singing before dawn drove away the night remind us of a life that was meant for our grandparents and their grandparents, a life that our children and grandchildren could also aspire to.
