The above heading may produce an unintentionally comic effect: the recorder, the baroque instrument par excellence, seems to be far from the pathos of triumph. But once you listen to our world-premiere release of Johann Friedrich Fasch's recently rediscovered Concerto in F major with Michael Schneider, you'll agree that this is indeed a superlative victory. At present Schneider cannot be topped on the recorder – worldwide. In his hands the recorder completely transcends everything that so often makes it seem an instrument of limited expressive capacity and becomes a voice for which all facets are possible. What is more, the Fasch concerto's extremely high technical demands even render the listener breathless. Schneider has joined other new discoveries to Fasch: concertos by Graupner, Schickhardt, Schultze, and Scheibe. Apart from Telemann's numerous such compositions, we now have before us almost the complete repertoire of recorder concertos from the German stylistic domain.
