Tchaikovsky's chamber musicœuvre occupies a relatively narrow space in the work of the Russian romantic. However, these compositions often show an inner participation of the master, which clearly eclipses his occasionally loud programmatic engagement in the great orchestral works. The third string quartet occupies a special position in the series of these confessional works, having been written in memory of the late violinist Ferdinand Laub, whom Tchaikovsky had been a friend of since his student days at the conservatory. Especially the slow movement Andante funebre e doloroso moved the audience to tears.
