Since 1981, several smaller tango-related events have taken place in Granada, Spain, culminating in major festivals. As the Councilor for Culture at Granada City Hall notes: "In my opinion, everyone is right to think that tango in Granada is becoming less strange and surprising with each passing year and more like our own, familiar tradition."
Tango is a genre whose heart lies with the people of the city, and therefore cities far from its birthplace in Buenos Aires can and should express their daily lives in the sharp truth of tango. Tango is the music of a special land: sophisticated, melancholic, solitary, "sexy yet sentimental," more tender than chivalrous, and full of "tango movements." Just as jazz has spread from the Northern Hemisphere to so many different latitudes, so too has tango spread "from the waist up."
Tango springs from a blend of different cultures, and its peculiar fragrance stems from its impurity. Therefore, it must be inextricably linked to its origins, a space open to new creations. This confirms its evolution from the "old guard" from Gardel to Piazzolla.
