Afterwards he studied in Vienna under Hans Swarowsky and in Salzburg under Herbert von Karajan. In 1971 he won a prize at the Conducting Competition of the “Herbert von Karajan Foundation” in Berlin. A long association with the Leningrad Philharmonic lasted until 1999. Signing on as Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (BRSO) in 2003, he is slated to continue in his post until 2021.
