Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was among the earliest advocates of Shostakovich's works in the West. His commitment to the Russian's symphonies is fortunately documented by several surviving recordings and radio broadcasts. MUSIC & ARTS has restored some of the earliest recordings from the 1930s and 1940s, some of which were made shortly after the works' premieres in Russia. They include the first recording of the Sixth and the first recording of the Fifth in the West. The recordings were carefully restored in 2009 and make three highly committed Szostakowicz interpretations available to Shostakovich lovers in the best possible quality.
