Johannes Brahms’ masterful viola sonatas, op. 120 (1894) signify an actual completion of the composer’s creative life and of the epoch of German music romanticism generally. Violist Yuri Bashmet has been active for almost forty years, a performer of the entire viola concert repertoire and an initiator of numerous works by contemporary composers. Pianist Mikhail Muntian has been Yuri Bashmet’s constant ensemble partner. These 1984 recordings are coupled with a 1977 Schubert Arpeggione.
