The first Naxos CD misses out the Concerto in modo misolidio and includes instead the much finer if rather extended Toccata and the concise and rather engaging Fantasia slava. The Russian pianist, Konstantin Scherbakov, is a persuasive and at times dazzlingly brilliant soloist and he is accompanied persuasively by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava) under Howard Griffiths. The recording is excellent and this disc is well worth its modest cost.
Scherbakov’s account of the Concerto in modo misolidio is superior in every way (except recorded quality) to Tozer’s on Chandos—and a third of the price. The Concerto a cinque makes a delightful and inventive makeweight. • Penguin Guide, January 2009
