Einojuhani Rautavaara, born in 1928, is one of Finland's most important composers after Sibelius. The composer considered his first opera Kaivos, written between 1957 and 1962, his best. Due to their references to the Hungarian uprising of 1956, a stage production in Finland was not possible for political reasons (Finland bordered the former Soviet Union). In 1963 there was a Finnish television production of the opera. The present CD recording was made in connection with the first, albeit concertante, performance of the work in Finland in September 2010 in Tampere. The Commissioner's main part will be sung by 70 year old baritone Jorma Hynninen, who can look back on an international stage career of almost 40 years. The renowned conductor Hannu Lintu conducts the Philharmonic Orchestra Tampere.
