Just before she appeared on stage, news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination was announced, casting a sombre silence across the hall. In that moment of grief, Biret’s performance was hailed as ‘a great healing,’ her artistry lifting spirits through Rachmaninov’s sweeping themes.
Preserved in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry, this historic concert endures as testimony to Biret’s extraordinary musicianship and cultural significance.
