Together with Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropowich, pianist Emil Gilels is one of the most important Russian musicians of the 20th century.
The present archive recordings will be published here for the first time. While all his earlier recordings were made in the studio, Gilels shows his best form in these concert recordings from the Royal Festival Hall in front of the London audience. In the Times, the critic William Mann praised the truly Beethoven brio in the first movement of the Third Piano Concerto, without losing the clarity and firmness of the phrasing. In the Largo he emphasized the great dignity and in the Rondo the liveliness with an exactly correct tempo choice. The New Philharmonia Orchestra accompaniment under Sir Adrian Boult was highly praised by all critics in both concerts.
