    opis

Georg Schumann's chamber music (his piano trios) is already familiar to our listening audience, and a very positive review after its release stated that it whetted the appetite for other such discoveries. Voilà: our first CD featuring symphonic works by Georg Schumann, who for many years was the director of the Sing-Akademie in Berlin and a professor of composition at the Prussian Academy of the Arts. Today he is being rediscovered as a late romanticist, but during his lifetime he was regarded as a new romanticist. He was eighteen years old and studying under Carl Reinecke in Leipzig when he wrote his first symphonic work, the Symphony in B minor. In 1888 he submitted this same work to a competition held by the Konzerthaus in Berlin for symphonic works and was awarded the first prize in a field of fifty-seven composers – a distinction that won him instant fame in Germany. In addition to this prize symphony, our first symphonic portrait of Georg Schumann includes his full-length programmatic Serenade of 1902.
