White Nile, Blue Nile...tributaries and influences. Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan are the three sides of a triangle within which music arose through movements of populations.Therein are Cairo, Addis Ababa and Khartoum: laboratories for musical experiments based on traditions whilst influenced by elements coming from other popular musics of the world. Of the latter, jazz has been the most influential. But fertile traditions dwell on the river banks, feeding turbulent waves that convey new currents. The music in this impressivley packaged and annotated set ranges from traditional to contemporary, encompassing many of the greatest artists from the three countries (with one track from Uganda for good measure).
