Alban Berg had been a great admirer of the great colleague since the late premiere of Gustav Mahler's gruesome fairy-tale cantata "Das klagende Lied". In the opening concert of the 2011 Salzburg Festival, old master Pierre Boulez coupled Mahler's rarely heard early work "Das klagende Lied" with Berg's symphonic pieces from the opera Lulu and his concert aria "Der Wein", which the Wiener Zeitung described as a successful "tightrope act between colour sensuality and structure"
With stars such as Dorothea Röschmann, Anna Larsson, Johan Botha and Anna Prohaska, the audience in Salzburg experienced a concert of the highest order.
