In all styles of jazz - apart from solo interludes - the drums have the task of supporting the musicians in improvising and inspiring them rhythmically. In this recording, drummer Billy Cobham becomes a competitor, sometimes a creative rhythm giver for guitar, brass, keyboard and violin solos. The term jazz, which has no valid explanation for its origin, only became a term for a style in music in 1916. Up to this time the word jazz was used in the colloquial language in the erotic sense. Completely new about this style is the liberation from the beat as a measure of time, as it was customary in Western music. In jazz, the multibeat, shaped by rhythm, becomes a measure of time, and the syncopation typically attributed to jazz reinforces the impression of restlessness.
