Arvo Pärt's Johannes Passion is at the front of a long line of works that can be attributed to the liturgical period of the Passion. He takes the narrative tradition of Christian lithurgy as a starting point, but dramatizes the Passion story on the basis of historical and timeless aspects. What distinguishes Pärt's work most clearly from other lithurgical compositions are the silences, the pauses. The missing notes are in a way almost more important than the composed ones.
